OROVILLE HOSPITAL RECEIVES $10 MILLION GIFT TO ESTABLISH THE MAGUIRE NEUROPSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE
The new neuropsychiatric institute is named in honor of the life work of the late Gerald Eugene Maguire MD, and his continuing legacy through his son Gerald Anthony Maguire MD.
OROVILLE, Calif., Feb. 19, 2025 – Oroville Hospital is announcing the establishment of The Maguire Neuropsychiatric Institute made possible through a $10 million donation facilitated by Gerald Anthony Maguire MD. The institute will enhance neuropsychiatric care in our community and surrounding region by providing excellence in patient care, clinical research and medical education.
“Our establishment of the Maguire Neuropsychiatric Institute represents a transformational movement in mental healthcare,” states Robert J. Wentz, the President and Chief Executive Officer of Oroville Hospital. “The institute will positively impact numerous lives and shape the future of neuropsychiatric care in the North Valley.”
The late Gerald Eugene Maguire MD dedicated his life’s work in championing for the underserved mental health community in California. Dr. Maguire brought much-needed psychiatric health care to our region as the founding director of what is now known as Butte County Behavioral Health. Dr. Maguire also effected policies across our State of California with his creation of compassionate and effective programs that serve as models today. His trailblazing career was centered on his passion for the humane treatment of those suffering from serious mental illness, creating a novel means of caring for the underserved. Towards the end of his career as a physician, he was especially driven to address the impact of the Camp Fire on the people affected in his hometown of Paradise.
Over the remaining years of his life, his passion was to create a psychiatric residency program to serve his community and through the efforts of his son, Gerald A. Maguire, MD and his colleague and mentee, Lynne Pappas, MD, his vision is now reality.
The Maguire Neuropsychiatric Institute of Oroville Hospital will soon begin training the next generation of psychiatrists through its newly established residency training program and will begin providing psychiatric inpatient hospital services in Oroville.
“As a native of Paradise, California, I am honored to serve my community and continue my father’s legacy with the establishment of the Maguire Neuropsychiatric Institute,” expressed Gerald A. Maguire MD, Staff Psychiatrist and Faculty Director of Oroville Hospital’s Graduate Medical Education programs.
“This gift ensures our institute will train a sustainable stream of outstanding psychiatric physicians to serve our community for decades long into the future,” stated Lynne Pappas MD, Director of Residency Training in Psychiatry.
The inaugural residency class of psychiatry residents at The Maguire Neuropsychiatric Institute of Oroville Hospital will commence in July 2025. In the upcoming weeks, a ceremony to commemorate the institute will be held on-site at the Oroville Hospital campus.
