  • ACLS Certification required if floating to Recovery Room/PACU

Duties & 
Responsibilities: 

Job Summary

  • Provides nursing care to patients of all ages
  • Conducts an initial and ongoing assessment designed to gather data relevant to the patient’s individual needs and age group
  • Scrub or circulate as assigned
  • Help in the work area
  • Help in keeping overall Operating Room clean and tidy
  • Report on and off duty at the control desk
  • Report on and off duty at the control desk for lunch
  • Inform control desk where you are at all times while on duty
  • Make sure room is cleaned, straightened and stocked before going off duty
  • When free:
    • Help in rooms by opening cases or helping with stocking
  • When case finishes early:
    • Help in rooms
  • Proper telephone and intercom etiquette
  • Knowledge and proper use of Surgery Department equipment and instrumentation
  • Proper use of time cards
  • Check bulletin board daily for notices and schedule change
  • Remain with patient while on O.R. table; never leave patient alone
  • Keep abreast of new changes occurring in the Surgery Department
  • Keep abreast of new techniques and procedures
  • Understand and perform standardization of set-ups
  • Economical use of supplies
  • Knowledge of handling and care of surgical instruments
  • Knowledge of fire and disaster procedure
  • Knowledge of cardiac arrest procedures
  • Know location of fire alarms, fire extinguishers and fire hoses
  • Responsible for proper sponge, needle and instrument counts
  • Constantly aware of proper aseptic technique and observe for any breaks in same
  • Responsible for keeping records of operative procedure
  • Responsible for all specimens and their proper labeling
  • Transport and check all blood for transfusions from lab
  • Takes O.R. call as scheduled
  • Participate in unit meetings and educational activities in order to develop skills and grow in awareness
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Duties

  • Conducts an initial and on-going assessment designed to gather data relevant to the patient’s individual needs taking into consideration specific needs for age
  • Review of assessments of patients: Respiratory; Cardiac; Neurologic; Renal; Multisystem and Psychosocial
  • In collaboration with the patient families, implements a plan of care:
  • Identifies nursing diagnoses or problems based on patients assessments
  • Formulates an etiology for nursing diagnosis
  • Identifies desired outcomes each nursing diagnosis/problem
  • Determines nursing intervention to reach outcomes
  • Prioritizes patient care activities
  • Begins discharge planning
  • Provides, delegates and supervises care for medical and surgical patients
  • Evaluates patient’s response to interventions/reassesses and documents on patient’s record
  • Establishes priorities for patient care activities
  • Delegates nursing activities to appropriate staff
  • Reports changes in patient’s status to charge nurse or physician, and staff caring for patient
  • Documents nursing care consistent with hospital charting standards
  • Complies with hospital policy for receiving doctors’ orders, including verbal and phone
  • Orients patients and family to unit environment as able
  • Relates unit policy regarding visitors to family and friends
  • Accurately gives report to oncoming shift
  • Report extraordinary patient problems to supervisor, Nurse Executive or administrator as necessary
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Other Info: 

Lifting Requirements: Work area is well lighted and ventilated. Regularly exposed to the risks of blood borne and airborne diseases. Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Exposed to noise, chemicals, communicable diseases, and hazardous materials. Wears personal protective equipment as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to handle or feel objects, or controls; each with hands and arms; and talk to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk or stand for extended periods, occasionally required to sit, balance; stoop, kneel or crouch.

Generally lifting objects not more than 50 lbs. and/or carrying objects weighing 20 lbs.

The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds with help.
